Every year around this time I get slightly more than mildly absorbed in the game of baseball (of the professional realm). I relish listening to offseason changes and thoroughly enjoy reading about various comments that emerge from current players. But despite this rapid interest, I get bored rigid with baseball about 20 games into the season. Within my cranium inhabits a very short attention span. I cannot handle all of the games. But regardless, it is February and I am presently interested. The following are the current things that have caught my eye. Keep in mind that none of this is important at all and bears no weight to the game. With all of the articles and commentary that I have either read or listened to lately, I have identified baseball’s loser and winner.
Baseball Loser:
There is a reason that A-Rod is on the list of most hated athletes. The guy is a major bag of the douche variety. And this is coming from a Yankees fan. I recently read that A-Rod is on a special diet. Good for him. I am on a special diet. I do not eat carbs. I do not consume sugar. But unlike A-Rod, I know how to be polite when I eat with others or attend a restaurant. I suck it up and risk illness. Carbs make me very sick. But I eat bread or pasta if someone puts it in front of me at a social event or couples outing. A-Rod should learn something from me or just consume his food at home. I recently read that this stupid 3B a-hole takes a cooler to restaurants with his own food. Outrageous. This is offensive to his company and the restaurant. He is self-rightous and an abysmal patron. Society should actually ban him from existing.
Baseball Winner:
It is difficult not to respect Terry Francona. For years managers have looked like idiots in the player uniforms. They are old, robust and out-of-shape. I loved that Francona wore a long-sleeved shirt instead of the stupid uniform. He does not live in middle-aged man’s fantasy world! We all know what that world consists of - baseball uniforms and corvettes. Thank you, Terry.
And to make me love Francona even more – he recently called out Bobby Valentine with his prohibition policy. Francona is right – it is obviously a PR ploy. This ban reminds me of when I was a senior in high school and the school system banned PG-13 movies from the high school. We were clearly all over 13. And similarly, most (if not all) baseball players are over 21. And Francona may be right – the players may reach in their soul and pull out their inner 13-year-old rebel and sneak booze in the dugout. I would hesitate to blame them. Most citizens of this country fail to embrace repression. We like to fight and rebel. And I will not blame the Red Sox if they fight and rebel.
